Strapped for Cash in the Summertime

My NV Energy bill was over $500 this month.  Last year at this time it came *thisclose* to getting to $1,000.00.  It's either that or die from the heat.

There are certain things about living here that I forget about until it happens again.  Like how hot it can really get here.  Winter is just long enough for me to forget about it, as my tank tops drift slowly to the back of the closet.

Then the NV Energy bill comes after it starts to get hot, and you have to start cutting down on life.  No more going to nice restaurants or paying for the gas to get up to Red Rock or Valley of Fire.  It's too hot to do anything but stay inside the house and "enjoy" the air conditioning we are paying through the nose for.

We have a pet, so lowering temps while we are away isn't an option.  A long haired old calico is not going to put up with the heat for long, and I don't want to come home to a dead cat.

There is nothing to do but wait out the heat, and wonder what normal people do with their summer.  I imagine cool pools and fair weather hiking.  Why do we live in this heat?
